Collateral Damage / Zivilopfer

War is raging in the Gaza strip. Rockets are falling and exploding onto Southern Israel. The situation is very complex, and the history of violence is very old. Who is a soldier, who is a civilian, who is a terrorist?

Es herrscht Krieg im Gazastreifen. Raketen fliegen und explodieren im südlichen Israel. Die Situation is sehr kompliziert, und die historischen Gründe der Gewalt sind vielfältig. Wer ist Soldat, wer ist ein Zivilist, wer ist eine Terrorist?

One method to eliminate a terrorist threat nowadays seems to be to attack from the air, either by plane or helicopter like the Israelis, or as the US does in Afghanistan or Pakistan, by remote controlled drones. So bombs or rockets are fired into a dwelling killing or severely wounding the people in the house; and the hope is that the "bad guy" will be harmed. - Well, so it happened with an attach on one of the Hamas leaders just a few days ago in Gaza, sure the targeted person was killed, but also four of his wives and several of his children (some news reports say 4 kids, others that even 9 died). - Well, I don't want to say that this person should not be brought to justice, but I do question the means and the cost of this attack.

Eine Methode um Terroristen zu bekämpfen ist heutzutage der Angriff aus der Luft, entweder von Flugzeugen und Hubschraubern aus wie Israel, oder wie es die USA es in Afghanistan und Pakistan machen, mit ferngesteuerten Dronenflugkörpern. Also, Bomben und Raketen werden auf die Häuser der Verdächtigen gefeuert, und die Leute die sich gerade in Haus befinden werden getötet oder schwerst verwunded, und man hofft dabei daß auch der "Bösewicht" auf den man es abgesehen hat, dabei ist. - So geschehen erst vor ein Tagen im Gazastreifen. Bei einem Angriff wurde nicht nur ein ranghoher Hamasführer getötet, sondern auch vier seiner Frauen und mehrere seiner Kinder (einige Berichte sagen es waren vier, andere sagen es waren neun Kinder die starben). - Ich will hier nicht sagen daß dieser Mann nicht bestraft werden sollte, aber ich wundere mich über die Art und Weise und die Kosten für diesen Angriff.

So my question is, when does the force applied become disproportionate to the gains achieved. When is there too much "collateral damage" (a dreadful paraphrasing for innocent people being killed) for the military to stop this tactic? Are a couple of civilians killed justifiable, or maybe 20, or 200, what if about 2000? When will it stop? - To take the argument to the extreme, will there be bombings of apartment buildings in NY city next, because there is a drug kingpin hiding on the 4th floor (remember there is also the "war on drugs" going on)?

So, meine Frage is die, wann werden die Mittel unverhältnismäßig gegenüber dem Vorteil den man gewinnt? Wann ist da zu viel "Kollateralschaden" (eine schreckliche Umschreibung für unschuldig getötete Menschen) - Um das Argument noch etwas auf die Spitze zu treiben: Wird man bald sehen wie die Polizei einen Wohnblick in New York bombardiert, weil da ein Drug Dealer im 4. Stock versteckt ist (man bedenke hier in den USA redet man auch vom "Krieg gegen die Drogen")?

Who is a "enemy" these days. The picture of the traditional soldier dressed in red fighting the other soldier dressed in blue, is no longer valid. Today it is "combatants" that look like civilians. The BBC published an interesting article on this with the title "Who is Civilian?"

Wer ist der "Feind" heutzutage? Die Zeiten wo die Armee in der roten Uniform gegen die Armee in der blauen Uniform kämpft, sind lange vorbei. Heute sehen die "Kombatanten" aus wie Zivilisten, und man trägt keine Rangabzeichen. Die BBC hat einen sehr interessanten Artikel mit der Überschrift "Who is Civilian?" veröffentlich (in englischer Sprache).

I hope that all fighting (on both sides) will stop as soon as possible. The suffering is too much.

Ich hoffe daß alle Kampfhandlungen (auf beiden Seiten) so schnell wie möglich aufhören. Das Leid ist zu groß.
