The Olympics Opening Ceremonies / Die Eröffnung der Olympiade

No matter how one looks at it: mainland China is a, at times very brutal, communist dictatorship. Their human rights records are abysmal, and freedom of speech or freedom of the press is non-existant. So, why do our leaders have to go there and give legitimacy to such a regime. Why must George Bush (and now also the French president) go and attend the Olympic opening ceremonies?

Egal wie man es auch dreht oder wendet: China ist eine, manchmal sehr brutale, kommunistische Diktatur. Pressefreiheit und freie Meinungäußerungen gibt es nicht, und die zahlreichen Menschenrechtsverletzungen zeugen von der Brutalität der Regierung. So, warum müssen dann Präsident George Bush, (und nun auch der französische Präsident) unbedingt zur Eröffnung der Olympia anreisen um dieses Regime zu legitimieren?

You may say "Sport should be seperated from Politics", but I think that, in my opinion, is nonsense. Of course the games are exploited by the regime in Beijing for their propagandistic values; like Joseph Goebbels used the 1936 Olympic to great effect for the Nazis.

Manche sagen "Sport hat nichts mit Politik" zu tun, aber das sehe ich nicht so. Natürlich hat die Ausrichtung der Spiele jede Menge mit Politik und Propaganda der dortigen Machthaber zu tun; wie schon damals 1936 Joseph Goebbels bei den Spielen im Nazi Berlin ausgenutzt.

Please Mr. Bush and Mr. Sarkozy - stay at home and enjoy the games on TV, but don't shake hands with the dicators!

Bitte, Herr Bush und Herr Sarkozy - bleibt zu Hause und seht Euch die Spiele im Fernsehen an, aber schüttelt nicht die Hände der dortigen Diktatoren.
