"Cecilia" our new kitten / unser neues Kätzchen

As of  Sunday we have a new kitten.  Her name is "Cecilia" and she is a calico cat, that means her colorings are black, orange, and white. - She is the offspring of a feral stray in our neighborhood. We think she is the only survivor of the litter. - More pictures are here .

"Cecilia"

From Palm to Apple / Von Palm nach Apple iPodTouch

A few month ago I purchased a iPodTouch (32GB) from Apple. The idea was to retire my old Palm LifeDrive and to use the new and shiny iPod technology as my new PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to keep track of my contacts, calendar, my to-do-list, etc..

Online I had read that Apple was opening up an application store and that many useful applications for this platform would be available. So, I decided to buy the iPodTouch and hoped that the software that comes with it would be useful.  --Well, it is a very slick and very nice form-factor. But - boy was I disappointed by the programs that came with it. The calculator was extremely basic (not even a % button). The notepad has no cut and paste, or other fonts. No file system. No mass delete for emails, and no email subfolders to sort ones correspondance. --  I think Apple really blew it with this platform.

By now Apple has fixed some of the problems through software updates, but only some, there still is no cut and paste functionality.  Some of the third party programs that are offered through the Application Store are useful, but for me it is still quite a long way from the functionality that I had on the Palm platform. -- Pity!

-- Schade!

Apple has been known for its excellent user interface and functionality on its main computers lines, but with the iPhone and the iPodTouch I am beginning to wonder; maybe the programmers working on these platforms all came from the music side (iPod) of the house.  Yes, it is very jazzy, but how about its usefulness to the user who want a PDA? -- I also understand that Apple is very restrictive as to what third party companies can do in their software. Many companies are complaining that Apple is not supporting their attempts to make the platform a better one. Also, so I read, it seems to take an exorbitantly long time for third party software change (and fixes) to be approved by apple.  Third party programs are sold only through the app store and Apple controls each and every offering or update.

I hope that in the near future Apple will come up with some of the changes that are needed to make the iPhone and iPodTouch platforms a viable option for PDA users.

Another Bail-Out / Schon wieder aus der Patsche helfen

Last time I wrote about the request by the big three American car manufacturers to obtain a 500 Billion cheap loan from the US  government, when yet another bail-out makes the news; this time for the US mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

And again the CEOs of these firms have mismanaged the state of their companies and misread the signs of the time; some say they even fudged the books to make their companies look better than they really were. - And now that the government is taking over these firms (at the risk and expense of the tax payers), they cry for their bonuses. -- Isn't is a marvelous economical system we live in?

The total costs for these takeovers are not yet fully known, but it could easily be another multi-billion dollar bail-out. -- If you ask me, the CEO of those two firms should be forced to repay previously paid bonusses (because of incompetence). What I do grant them in payments though, is the usual 26 weeks of unemployment money that the average Joe in the US would get.

Cheers,

US Car Companies / Amerikanische Autofirmen

I read that US car manufacturers are asking for up to 50 billion in help (in form of cheap loans) from the government to bail them out. That is to bail them out from their own management failures. For years now the American auto industry has pushed the large SUVs and gas guzzling models, even though the writing was on the wall. Other (foreign) car companies have not missed these trends and made the necessary adjustments.

How come that Toyota and Volkswagen are not making similar requests to their respective governments? How come they are still making money (and profits) on their product offerings?

Where were the American executives during the past 4 to 5 years? Were they too busy spending their multi-million-dollar bonuses? Were they so greedy to rake in the high profit margins for the gas guzzling models that they were blinded?

And now those very same executives are telling us they need help. Please, please dear tax payer bail us out (and keep our hefty bonuses coming)! - Guess who is holding the bag if these loans default, due to (continued) mismanagement? -- Maybe it is time for some of these bosses to be fired, and forced to give back their bonuses. - Well, I am not holding my breath to see that happen.

Food for thought.
Man kann ja mal drüber nachdenken.
