The Financial Crisis / Die Finanzkrise

I am not an expert in financial matters, and I don't really understand what led to the current catastrophic crisis in the financial word.  But I do understand that American (and some British) banks were making mortgage loans to folks they knew wouldn't be able to repay the loans for their houses (that is, I believe, what is termed the "sub-prime housing crisis"). But how did that effect so many other banks and financial institutions around the word? -- Well, I came upon this article in the New York Times that explains a bit about the background. It was a real education for me reading about how this crisis developed.

Ich bin kein Finanzgenie, und verstehe auch eigentlich nicht wirklich was zu dieser katastrophalen Weltbankenkrise geführt hat.  Aber ich verstehe daß amerikanisch (und auch einige britische) Banken Geld für Hypotheken an Leute verliehen haben wo sie fast von vornherein wussten daß diese es nicht zurückzahlen können (das nannte sich dann, so glaube ich, die sog. "sub-prime Hypothekenkrise").   Aber wie hat sich dieser Effekt auf so viele andere Banken und Geldinstitute weltweit ausgewirkt? -- Na, ich habe hier einen interessanten Artikel (leider nur in englischer Sprache) in der New York Times gefunden der die Hintergründe ein wenig erklärt.   Für mich was das extrem lehrreich wie diese Krise zustande gekommen ist.
