Voting Machines - Wahlmaschinen

I just read an article that an American company finally admitted that its voting machines are flawed. First they denied it, then they found other excuses, but after a long while they had to admit that for the past 10 years their machines were not counting accurately, and that they could lose votes. Here is the article with the admission from a the Cleveland newspaper.


Habe gerade einen Artikel gelesen daß eine amerikanische Firma endlich eingestanden hat, daß ihre Wahlmaschinen hier defect sind. Zuerst hat man natürlich alles geleugnet, dann Ausreden gegeben, und es hat eine ganze Weile gedauert bis man endlich zugegeben hat daß die Maschinen schon seit 10 Jahren nicht korrekt laufen, und daß Stimmen u.U. verloren gehen können. Hier ist ein Zeitungsartikel (in englisch) von Cleveland, Ohio.


Do you remember the vote in Florida, and the hanging chads from the punched card voting machines? That was almost 8 years back, and the gentlemen (and women) computer technicians still haven't come up with a machine that is constructed to precisely and accurately reflect the will of the voters. Back then George Bush won Florida (and with it the nationwide election) by a mere 500 votes. That is less than 1/2 of 1 percent. And even then the voting machines by the aforementioned company were suspected of not working correctly.

Das war fast 8 Jahre her und die Herren (und Frauen) Computer-Techniker haben es immernoch nicht geschafft Maschinen zu konstruieren die präzise arbeiten und auf die man sich als Wähler verlassen kann. Damals im Jahr 2000 hat George Bush in Florida mit nur knapp 500 Stimmen gewonnen. Das sind weniger als ein halbes Prozent. Selbst damals schon waren die Maschinen der besagten Firma verdächtigt worden.


Much was reported then on the irregularities and the questioned reliability of the voting machines. Would the outcome been different if everywhere people were voting with a paper ballot and a good old pencil instead of the machines? The advantages of the computer are, of course, that they report results much quicker (which is good for the news media), but their drawback are that you don't know how accurate the vote is. Some states and precincts even dropped the requirement of a paper trail, they believe that the internal count of the machine is sufficient.


Viel wurde damals über die Unregelmäßigkeiten und die Unzuverläßlichkeit der Maschinen geschrieben. Hätte es einen anderen US Präsidenten gegeben, wären anstatt von Computern, die guten alten Papierwahlzettel genommen worden? Der Vorteil der Computer ist natürlichd daß sie die Wahlergebnisse viel früher melden können (und das ist gut für die Medien) , der Nachteil ist natürlich daß man nicht weiß ob die Ergebisse korrekt sind. Einige Staaten und Gemeinden schreiben sogar noch nicht einmal einen Papierausdruck vor, die im Computer gespeicherten Werte werden einfach gutgläubig anerkannt.

See more info here, and YouTube here. - So, to prevent tampering some voting officials had the glorious idea to take the voting machines home at night, so that no-one can get to them (except of course the corrupt precinct official themselve).

Man hat bewiesen daß es recht einfach ist Wahlmaschinen zu manipulieren. Siehe diesen Artikel hier, und YouTube here (beide in Englisch).

Um hat zu verhindern hatten einige Wahlleiter die gloreiche Idee die Maschinen einfach mit nach Hause zu nehmen, damit keiner dran kann (ausgenommen natürlich korrupte Wahlleiter selbst).

Here in Oregon they have a system that is unique in the US. Here every election is entirely done as an absentee ballot. Each eligable voter receives their voting package in the mail. The system seems to work well, the voter participation in Oregon is usually slightly higher than in the rest of the US. - You can sent in your filled out ballot by mail (but you have to couch up the postage for that), or - if you want to save the stamp - you take it to special collection boxes (ours it in the parking lot of the local library). A great low-tech solution. Why do it complicated, when there are easy ways.

Hier in Oregon hat man ein System was in den Staaten einzigartig ist. Hier wird ausschließlich mit Briefwahl gewählt. Jeder Wahlbereichtigte bekommt einen Wahlzettel nach Hause geschickt. Das System funktioniert gut, und die Wahlbeteiligung hier in Oregon ist sogar ein paar Prozent größer als in den restlichen U.S.A. - Man kann dann seinen ausgefüllten Wahlzettel entweder mit der Post (das Porto muß man leider berappen), oder aber (wenn man das Porto sparen will) wirft man es in spezielle Briefkästen (z.B. unserer ist auf dem Parkplatz der öffentlichen Bücherei). Eine herrliche Niedrigtechnologielösung. Warum kompliziert wenn es auch einfach geht. -
