From Palm to Apple / Von Palm nach Apple iPodTouch

A few month ago I purchased a iPodTouch (32GB) from Apple. The idea was to retire my old Palm LifeDrive and to use the new and shiny iPod technology as my new PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to keep track of my contacts, calendar, my to-do-list, etc..


Vor einigen Monaten habe ich mir einen iPodTouch (32GB) von Apple gekauft. Ich dachte mir ich ziehe von meinem alten Palm LifeDrive um auf die neue, viel bejubelte, Technik, und benutze ihn dann als meinen PDA (Persönlichen digitalen Assitenten) um meine Addressen, meinen Kalender, und meine Todo-Liste (Aufgabenliste) usw. darauf zu verwalten.

Online I had read that Apple was opening up an application store and that many useful applications for this platform would be available. So, I decided to buy the iPodTouch and hoped that the software that comes with it would be useful.  --Well, it is a very slick and very nice form-factor. But - boy was I disappointed by the programs that came with it. The calculator was extremely basic (not even a % button). The notepad has no cut and paste, or other fonts. No file system. No mass delete for emails, and no email subfolders to sort ones correspondance. --  I think Apple really blew it with this platform. 


Ich hatte Online gelesen daß Apple einen Laden für Programme aufmachen wollte wo man viele nützliche Programme erwerben kann.  So, habe ich mich also entschlossen und so einen iPodTouch gekauft, in der Hoffnung daß die Programme die angeboten werden mir nützlich sind. -- Naja, das Gerät sieht sehr gut aus und liegt auch, klein aber fein, gut in der Hand.  Aber, oh je, was für eine Enttäuschung waren die eingebauten Programme. Das Addierprogramm hatte noch nicht mal eine %-Taste. Das Notizbuch hatte kein Cut-and-Paste, oder andere Fonts (Schriftbilder). Es gibt keine Dateien als Ablage, und im Mailprogramm muß man jede Email einzeln löschen. -- Ich glaube Apple hat da wirklich ziemlichen Mist gebaut.


By now Apple has fixed some of the problems through software updates, but only some, there still is no cut and paste functionality.  Some of the third party programs that are offered through the Application Store are useful, but for me it is still quite a long way from the functionality that I had on the Palm platform. -- Pity!


In der Zwischenzeit hat Apple einige der oben erwähnten Probleme gelöst, aber eben nur einige, es gibt immer noch kein Cut-and-Paste.  Einige der Programme die von Drittfirmen durch den Application Store angeboten werden sind nützlich, aber für mich ist es noch ein weiter Weg bis ich die Funktionen wiederhabe die ich von meinem Palm LifeDrive gewöhnt bin.  -- Schade!


Apple has been known for its excellent user interface and functionality on its main computers lines, but with the iPhone and the iPodTouch I am beginning to wonder; maybe the programmers working on these platforms all came from the music side (iPod) of the house.  Yes, it is very jazzy, but how about its usefulness to the user who want a PDA? -- I also understand that Apple is very restrictive as to what third party companies can do in their software. Many companies are complaining that Apple is not supporting their attempts to make the platform a better one. Also, so I read, it seems to take an exorbitantly long time for third party software change (and fixes) to be approved by apple.  Third party programs are sold only through the app store and Apple controls each and every offering or update.


Apple hat den Ruf für eine wirklich gute Bedienungsoberfläche und für Funktionalität in ihren Computern, aber mit dem iPhone und dem iPodTouch fange ich an das zu bezweifeln; vielleicht kamen die Programmierer in dieser Sparte alle aus der Musikindustrie (iPod ist ja ein Musikabspieler).  Ja, das Gerät ist sehr cool, aber wie steht es mit der Nützlichkeit als PDA? -- Ich habe auch gehört daß Apple sehr restriktiv mit den Firmen umgeht die Programme für diese Geräte anbieten, oft ist ihnen untersagt bestimmte Funktionen zu benutzen.  Viele Dritthersteller beschweren sich auch daß Apple sie nicht unterstützs, und unheimlich langsam ist wenn es darum geht Verbesserungen (und Reparaturen) für Programme zu prüfen. Die Programme von Drittherstellern können nur duch den Application Store von Apple vertrieben werden, und Apple kontrolliert natürlich jedes Programm und jeden Update.


I hope that in the near future Apple will come up with some of the changes that are needed to make the iPhone and iPodTouch platforms a viable option for PDA users.


Ich hoffe sehr daß Apple in der nicht zu langen Zukunft die Änderungen vornimmt die nötig sind um das iPhone und den iPodTouch zu einer nützlichen Plattform für PDA Benutzer zu machen.
